Description: Baystate Academy Charter Public School (BACPS) is a college preparatory charter school in Springfield, MA, which opened its doors to students in the Fall of 2013. BACPS is providing rigorous academic standards and educational opportunities rooted in health sciences to students in grades 6 – 12. Through unique partnerships with Baystate Health, Springfield Technical Community College, and EL Education, BACPS will prepare students to enter the world of higher education and health careers with scientific knowledge, ethics, integrity, and compassion.
BACPS is seeking a dynamic, talented, and dedicated art teacher to join our school community. Teachers will serve as the primary teacher in a single subject area, collaborate with grade-level teams to implement an inquiry-based, standards-based curriculum, and serve as Crew Leaders to a crew (the group of students.) Teachers will participate in continuous assessment of students including ongoing targeted feedback, student-led conferences, and end-of-unit exhibitions. Teachers will collaborate with the school principal, dean of students, and curriculum coach in designing project-based expeditions as well as family workshops and events, and be responsible for implementing and integrating new policies and services that support the school’s mission and instructional objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
- Teach knowledge and skills in 2D and 3D art, including but not limited to drawing, painting, ceramics, and art history
- Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations along with the ability to make qualitative judgments about art
- Understand a variety of “masters” techniques and be able to compare/contrast to contemporary theory and practice
- Knows and can apply elements of art and modern principles of design
- Models the foundations and different approaches to drawing media technique
- Teaches subject area according to curriculum guidelines specified by the charter school
- Further develops and refines a high-level, challenging curriculum in the subject area
- Maintains ongoing curriculum evaluation and development to meet the needs of students
- Collaborates with other faculty in the delivery of appropriate instructional approaches and best practices, working to serve the various learning styles and needs of students
- Implements curriculum and instruction in a manner consistent with BACPS mission statement, including understanding, modeling, and fostering independent thinking skills, creative problem solving, and abstract reasoning
- Holds parent/student/teacher conferences in a manner consistent with BACPS guidelines
- Participates in all professional development activities
- Participates in all staff meetings including school governance
- Demonstrates awareness of school/community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs
- May perform other projects and duties as directed by the principal
Education/Experience/Skills:
- Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in applicable field of study/education from an accredited college or university
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process and expertise in the specific content area
- Classroom teaching experience
- Demonstrated experience working with challenge groups in a standards-based environment, including utilizing assessments to place students, flexible pacing, flexible instruction, grouping and regrouping, acceleration, enrichment, and independent study to meet student needs
- Demonstrated success in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach
- Bilingual English/Spanish desirable
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with diverse populations
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues, community, and other school community staff
- A strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement.
