Baystate Academy Charter Public School (BACPS) is a college preparatory charter school in Springfield, Massachusetts, providing rigorous academic standards and educational opportunities rooted in health sciences to students in grades 6-to-12.  Baystate is an EL Education school and takes a three dimensional view of student achievement (EL Education Three Dimensions of Achievement).  As such, core practices (EL Education Core Practices) and EL Education's Equity Pillars serve as the foundation of structures and practices related to curriculum, instruction, culture, assessment and leadership.  In order to achieve this, leadership works in partnership with EL Education.

 

The Director of Talent’s primary focus will be on recruiting, selecting, on-boarding, and retaining talented educators. This person is responsible for the leadership, administration, and supervision of all talent recruitment, selection, on-boarding, and retention systems. The DOT reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with school principal, administration and teacher leaders, to map out and execute strong recruitment, selection, on-boarding, and retention processes that lead to our goals of a diverse and high performing team for our scholars. The DOT manages teacher certification, waivers, and serves as liaison with our business office.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

Ensure the school has a strong and diverse pipeline of prospective applicants for all open positions by managing relationships with local leaders, schools of education, and alternative teacher training programs.

  • Oversee and run hiring processes throughout the entire year, that are inclusive, equitable, rigorous, and aligned to the organization’s goals by creating and refining job descriptions and hiring processes, conducting interviews, tracking candidate status, communicating with candidates, checking references, and making offers.
  • Make sure everyone involved in the hiring process is on the same page on what the school is looking for, and is trained in the art of interviewing.
  • Develop and implement strategic efforts to market the school to prospective teachers through earned, paid, and owned media in a way that compellingly communicates what makes teaching and working at the school unique. 
  • Innovates to create professional pathways to recruit and retain strong and promising talent and provide strategic opportunities for growth.  This includes designing and providing targeted support for mid-level managers, team leads, and mentor teachers. 
  • Align hiring, recruitment, and retention efforts and the school’s DEI initiatives to build and maintain a culture of belonging for a diverse team of people.
  • Refine and oversee a performance management system that is meaningful, equitable and comprehensive and supports the development and retention of staff members.
  • Develop and refine systems for welcoming and onboarding new educators at all times of the year to ensure that they are well supported and feel a sense of belonging. 
  • Track, analyze, and present data on turnover, recruitment, retention and pipeline return on investment to inform strategy and resource allocation. 
  • Manage and track compliance with teacher licensure and certification requirements and specific conditions of employment.
  • Coach a small portfolio teachers, as needed.
  • Support the Executive Director and senior leaders with select projects related to dissemination, reporting, fundraising and communications. 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Teaching, Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, Human Resources or other applicable degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in one or more of the following: teacher development or mentoring, educator pipeline development, school-based human resources, teacher leadership, or other relevant experience.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects at once; working knowledge of Excel/Google Sheets and other tools to manage complex processes.
  • Experience with all aspects of the recruitment, hiring, and selection processes.
  • Ability to effectively partner with and support a number of senior staff throughout the hiring process.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
