POSITION SUMMARY:

Position is responsible for supplementing and supporting the literacy initiatives of Baystate Academy Charter Public School.  Position is responsible for coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in authentic literacy and intellectual development and instructional best practices. Position conducts professional development, performs classroom visitations, provides instructional feedback and demonstrates instructional techniques. 

 

Essential Duties 

  • Performs on-going classroom visitations, coach’s teachers in the improvement of instructional performance, and monitors improvement. 
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine benchmarks, identify areas for improvement, establish goals, and monitor improvement. 
  • Develops and conducts in-service training for teachers regarding instructional strategies and best practices. 
  • Demonstrates lessons in classroom situations for observation by teachers. 
  • Collaborates with other building coaches (science and math) and Director of Curriculum and Instruction to coordinate and facilitate the sharing of successful lessons to ensure successful implementation of the program. 
  • Assists Instructional Coaches, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Director of Special Education, and administrators with the organization and management of a comprehensive Structured Literacy program. 
  • Provides on-going support to teachers for successful student reading achievement. 
  • Strengthens teachers’ instructional knowledge and their repertoire of pedagogical strategies for teaching rigorous content to all students.
  • Facilitates the consistent use of effective literacy strategies by supporting teachers through co-planning, co-teaching, modeling, demonstration sessions, reflecting, and focused classroom observations.
  • Supports teachers in creating classroom environments in which literacy is consistently and effectively integrated and where all learners are actively engaged and supported in challenging and rigorous studies as they make meaning of academic content through daily reading, writing, oral communication experiences, and hands-on activities.
  • Meets regularly with Instructional Coaches and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction regarding classroom practices and provides ongoing feedback. 
  • Attends staff development and professional activities to improve/maintain knowledge of coaching skills and adult learning theory. 
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.

Other Duties 

  • Keeps abreast of developments, research, and technology in the areas of instructional best practices in literacy instruction. 
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Curriculum  and Instruction or other appropriate administrator.

Minimum Qualifications 

(Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Must possess a Master’s degree in education and be eligible for a Massachusetts Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist or be enrolled in an approved Reading Specialist program. 
  • Must possess 3 years of teaching experience.
  • Must be eligible for, or in possession of an appropriate Massachusetts teaching license.
  • Must demonstrate evidence of involvement in school activities and committees involving leadership responsibilities beyond those required in the classroom.
  • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of instructional best practices and adult learning theory.
  • Must possess excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers and administrators.
