Job Title: Director of Student Support Services Supervision: Principal Job Summary
Primary instructional leader in current special education trends as they relate and interface with general education students and curriculum. The Director will provide leadership in the implementation of Special Education Services and Social Emotional Learning in the development of the school's support of diverse learners. This also includes the coordination of ELL and Title 1/IIa programs. Must be able to plan professional development incorporating differentiation of instruction, curriculum modifications/accommodations, co-teaching and instructional strategies.
Student Support Services Duties
- Manage student support contracts, including special needs services, ELL and literacy services.
- Ensure students receive both in-class and extracurricular support and accommodations needed to achieve academic goals.
- Coordinate the delivery of Title 1/IIa programs.
- Assist principal with the personnel process in recruiting, selecting, supervising, and evaluating special education teachers/student support services.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations in matters related to Special Education and Section 504.
- Demonstrated strong leadership and administrative management skills.
- Coordinate the development of IEP’s and 504’s while supervising the referral of students to special education/ 504 services .
- Responsible for overseeing compliance of Federal and State Special Education Laws and legislation, i.e. IDEA.
- Initiates contact with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, parents, surrogates, advocates regarding complaints and compliance issues.
Social Emotional Duties
- Coordinate implementation of research-based social emotional learning (SEL) and positive behavior interventions aligned to a multi-tiered intervention framework restorative practices such as restorative justice as an alternative to suspensions and as a relationship building initiative in the school and community.
- Establish a process for ongoing progress monitoring, including the coordination of data collection and analysis. Assist schools in preparing and administering screening mechanisms, interpreting data gathered, and determining tier II and tier III interventions.
- Work with attendance team to connect students with chronic absenteeism to RTI or other supports Student Support Service Duties.
- Implement research-based interventions aligned with the three tiers of the RTI pyramid, including individual, group, and family therapy and case management for identified students.
- Manage the delivery of appropriate training, such as Universal Design for Learning, for staff and volunteers and support trauma professional development opportunities for staff.
- School Based Responsibilities/ Collaboration Duties
- Collaborates with principal on all special education issues.
- Responsible for all due process mediation and hearings.
- Monitors the data management system and files of special education students in collaboration with the principal and teachers.
- Provides staff with guidance regarding special education laws, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other appropriate statutes.
- Supervise and evaluate members of the Special Education, ELL and Student Support teams.
- Collaborates and provide coordination with all outside services providers.
- Projects enrollment, staff, and space needs for all student support services.
- Perform other duties as directed by the principal.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of curriculum/state framework and standards.
- Successful teaching experience in special education or related field.
- Outstanding leadership skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and State Special Education Legislation and Laws.
- Maintains positive relationships with private and public agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents, students and school staff.
- Strong orientation toward urban school systems, preferred.
- Certification requirements
- Master’s Degree or higher in Special Education/ Educational Leadership preferred.
- Massachusetts Certification as an Administrator of Special Education.
- Certification as a Special Education Teacher and a minimum of five (5) years’ teaching experience preferred.
